The leather: S.B. Foot Tannery

Some people may not realize that the Red Wing Shoe Co. produces all of the leather used in its footwear at its own tannery, the S.B Foot Tanning Company. Now one of the oldest, largest and last remaining tanneries in the United States, S.B. Foot Tanning Co. turns out some of the best leathers in the world. It is this expertise and commitment to quality that helps make Red Wing shoes truly unique.

A few months back we produced a series of films that help tell our story and the first subject is the S.B. Foot Tanning Co., because it all starts with with a piece of leather.

The man of one million pairs

”I got this ring from Bill Sweasy, the owner of Red Wing Shoe and a good friend of mine since childhood. I got it for selling a million pairs.”

We met up with Bob in Red Wing. As a retired employee, he managed to start our Heritage business in Japan. Without Bob, Red Wing Heritage would not have existed, and we would all wear crappy boots. Thank you Bob!

One of Europe’s pioneers is Matthijs from Red Wing Shoe Store Amsterdam. He is part of the team that started the third Red Wing Shoe Store in Europe. Besides running the store, he is the man behind dyedinred.com, the weblog on anything workwear inspired. Time for a chat.

Why Red Wing? I am a denim fanatic. Red Wing and denim both age with grace. I feel most for selling quality products, something more and more people start to realize as well. It’s a product that feels right.

When did you get your first pair of Red Wings? That would have been about seven years ago. I worked in a denim store in The Hague, when I saw a pair of Engineers. I couldn’t afford them so for two months I cut down my budget for food. I had never seen a pair of boots that tough. I had to have those, at any stake.
